First Day at World of Discovery Day Camp:

What to Expect

The night before the first day of camp is a big one. Backpacks are packed, swimsuits are laid out, and excitement is in the air. For many children, there is also a little curiosity about what the next day will bring.

At World of Discovery Day Camp in Bayside, Queens, we work hard to make every camper feel welcome from the moment their day begins. Here’s a look at what a typical first day at camp is like.

Starting the Day with Camp Transportation

For many campers, the adventure starts right in their neighborhood. World of Discovery provides complimentary transportation throughout Queens and Nassau County, making camp convenient for families across the region.

The bus ride is often where the first friendships begin. With counselors on board and a fun, welcoming atmosphere, campers quickly settle in and start getting excited about the day ahead. By the time they arrive at camp, many children already feel like part of the group.

First Day at World of Discovery Day Camp can include a fishing trip.

A Warm Welcome at Camp

When campers arrive, division leaders and counselors welcome them right away. They help campers get comfortable and introduce them to their groups.

One of the things parents appreciate most about World of Discovery is our commitment to maintaining small camper groups. This allows our staff to provide individual attention, encourage participation, and help every child feel included from the very first day.

For children who may be attending camp for the first time, this supportive environment helps build confidence and ease any first-day nerves.

Sports, Games, and Outdoor Fun

After getting settled, campers jump into a variety of activities designed to keep them active and engaged.

From basketball and soccer to team games and outdoor challenges, there are plenty of opportunities for campers to stay moving, have fun, and get to know their fellow campers. Our sports and recreation programs are designed for all skill levels, ensuring every child can participate and enjoy the experience.

The first day is all about creating positive energy and helping campers feel connected to their group.

Swim Time

Swimming is one of the most anticipated parts of the camp day.

Red Cross-certified lifeguards supervise every swim session. They focus on safety first. At the same time, they help campers build confidence in the water. Whether a child is learning basic skills or already a strong swimmer, they are grouped according to their ability level to ensure a positive experience.

For many campers, swim time quickly becomes a favorite daily activity and one of the highlights of the summer.

Lunch and New Friendships

By lunchtime, something special is already happening. Children who arrived that morning without knowing anyone are often laughing together, sharing stories, and making new friends.

Camp is about much more than activities. It is also about building social skills, developing independence, and creating meaningful connections. Counselors sit with campers during lunch, helping foster a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels part of the community.

These friendships often become some of the most memorable parts of the camp experience.

Afternoon Activities and Weekly Adventures

The fun continues throughout the afternoon with additional activities, games, and group experiences.

Campers also get a preview of the exciting trips and special events planned throughout the summer. World of Discovery’s weekly trip program gives campers the opportunity to explore new places, enjoy unique experiences, and create lasting memories with their friends.

Every week brings something different, giving campers plenty to look forward to all summer long.

Heading Home with Stories to Tell

By the end of the day, many campers who started the morning feeling uncertain are already looking forward to coming back.

The ride home is often filled with stories about new friends, favorite activities, swim time, and exciting moments from the day. Parents quickly discover that first-day jitters have been replaced with enthusiasm and anticipation for tomorrow.

For more than 30 years, World of Discovery Day Camp has been helping children from Queens, Nassau County, and surrounding communities build confidence, develop friendships, and enjoy unforgettable summers.

If you’re looking for a summer camp that combines sports, swimming, trips, and a supportive environment where every child can thrive, we invite you to discover what makes World of Discovery such a special place.
